Alan was appointed a Trustee of the International Non-Profit Reporting Foundation in March 2026. He previously served as President and Chair of the Board of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and as a Trustee and Audit Committee Chair of the International Valuation Standards Council. Alan also served as a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Audit & Risk Assurance Committee of the UK Department for International Development – now part of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

He currently chairs the Stakeholder Advisory Council to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) and the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA), and also chairs the Good Governance Academy.

Alan is a Non-Executive Director on the boards of Imperial Brands plc and William Grant & Sons Ltd, chairing the Audit Committees of both companies. He is also Chair of the Internal Control Committee of Jerónimo Martins SGPS, SA. He previously served as a Non-Executive Director at DS Smith plc until its acquisition by International Paper Inc in January 2025.

Earlier in his career, Alan spent more than 30 years with Unilever, including roles as Chief Audit Executive and Chief Financial Officer of the Global Foods Division.

In January 2023 Alan was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) by King Charles III.
